Dump/ready-mix concrete delivery truck accident rates edge up

In recent years, there have been several efforts made to use technology and increased awareness of driver fatigue to reduce truck-related accidents in Mississippi and throughout the rest of U.S. Truck drivers are also now required to electronically log their hours. However, accidents involving dump trucks and ready-mix concrete delivery trucks are still on the rise. The number of dump truck accidents involving serious accidents spiked nearly 3 percent, according to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA).

Towaway truck wrecks involving ready-mix concrete delivery trucks jumped even more, increasing by nearly 10 percent. FMSCA reports that accidents of this nature resulting in injuries increased by almost 4 percent in 2016, the latest year with statistics available. Fatal Ready-mix concrete truck accidents are also continuing to climb. The one bright spot with these stats is a slight decrease in fatal dump truck crashes in 2016 compared to what occurred the year prior.

These general increases with dump truck and ready-mix concrete delivery truck accidents come on the heels of related stats suggesting that progress seen with the reduction in overall large truck accidents, including ones involving dump and ready-mix cement trucks, over the past decade has apparently stalled. Combined efforts by federal regulators and insurance companies are credited with substantial declines in large truck accidents that occurred after the new millennium. By-the-load incentives, distracting driving involving cell phones and similar devices, and speeding are some of the possible reasons cited by experts for the reversal in accident rate declines.

Multiple legal issues may arise after truck wrecks, especially if personal injuries are involved. Depending on the circumstances, an attorney may pursue legal action against drivers, trucking companies, mechanics, or insurance companies. The extent of potential liability for drivers working as independent contractors is often based on how much oversight is done by a company a driver is doing work for. A lawyer might use available data on driver hours to look for hour of service violations and results from vehicle inspections to further identify responsible parties.  If you've been involved in such an accident,  call George B.
