Your secure load checklist

Whether you’re transporting a mattress atop your minivan or something more substantial on a big rig, it is imperative to your own safety and the safety of others that you secure your load properly.

Here’s a quick checklist you can look over to ensure you’re good to go.

Use the right vehicle

There's no way a smart car alone could transport a mattress. The same can be said for larger rigs if the maximum weight or mass of the objects exceed what the vehicle can handle. Don't take your chances trying to transport something that your vehicle wasn't designed to handle.

Securing lashings and chains

In addition to using the correct vehicle for the job, it's equally important to use the appropriate lashings, chains, tethers, netting, tarp, and straps. Note that the ever-popular bungee cord should not be your only tie-down method.

You'll also want to make sure to use these straps in a secure fashion. For example, direct lashing may be more secure than top-over lasing, depending on the shape of the item. Online examples can be great references to check and ensure you have used an optimum blocking and/or strapping method.

Double-check before driving

Before getting on the road, take a look at your vehicle and try to imagine a scenario in which something slips out of your vehicle. If it's possible, even due to an environmental factor like wind or rain, you haven't secured your load well enough to head out.

Your load should not be able to move side to side, up and down or back and forth. Always ask yourself whether those behind you will feel safe. If the answer is no, it's back to the drawing board. prevent movement

If a wreck happens while transporting a load

If someone else causes a car wreck while you are transporting a load, you and other drivers on the road are likely to suffer more serious damages and injuries. After a car wreck, always call on a skilled attorney to help you through the investigation.  If you need such help,  contact George B. Ready to help.
