CVSA to hold Operation Safe Driver Week July 14 to 20

Mississippi residents, including truck, bus and other commercial vehicle drivers, should be careful how they drive, especially during the week of July 14 to 20. The reason is that the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance will be holding its annual Operation Safe Driver Week at that time. This is a period of increased enforcement of traffic laws.

Last year, some 51,000 law enforcement personnel across North America were searching for unsafe drivers. They stopped 113,331 drivers in all and issued a total of 57,405 citations. It should be noted that 16,909 passenger vehicle drivers and 1,908 CMV drivers were cited for speeding. In addition, 87,907 were given warnings.

2019's Operation Safe Driver Week will focus on speeding, a perennial problem. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's Highway Loss Data Institute found that speeding has accounted for more than 25% of all car crash fatalities since 2008. In 2015, it was a factor in 94% of all traffic crashes, according to statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Besides speeding, police will be looking for distracted drivers (especially those who call or text behind the wheel), aggressive drivers and drunk or drugged drivers. Negligent behavior like not wearing a seat belt, improper lane changes, following too closely to the vehicle in front and ignoring traffic signals will also be noted.

Speeding remains an issue with truckers due to the pressure they feel to meet deadlines while also complying with hours-of-service regulations. When it factors into truck wrecks, victims may have a chance of obtaining compensation for their injuries, vehicle damage, pain and suffering and other losses. In this state, victims are required to file a claim within three years of the accident. It may be a good idea to see a lawyer first. An attorney may hire investigators to collect proof against the trucker.  If you've been in an accident,  call George B. Ready for diligent and timely representation to protect your rights.
